To ensure supply of potable water to people, reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment plants would be set up at Periyathalai and Manapad in the district. The infrastructure facility would be established at a cost of Rs. 1 crore through State Balanced Growth Fund, Collector M. Ravikumar said here on Monday.

Talking to reporters, he said the state-of-art water treatment plants would be designed with a capacity to supply 5,000 of potable water per hour each.

A proposal for Rs. 17.7 lakh had been forwarded to the government through Tourism Department to take up a water supply project at Kattabomman Fort in Panchalankurichi.

He said committees had been formed to promote social integration and communal harmony at 16 villages in Srivaikundam taluk.

Each committee would be headed by the respective panchayat president and comprise officials from the Departments of Revenue and Police. Besides, the local populace would also be involved, he noted.

As a first step towards achieving the goal, a communal harmony promotion meeting, chaired by Tuticorin Sub-Collector S. Gopala Sundara Raj and Superintendent of Police M. Durai, was convened at Srivaikundam taluk office on Saturday, he also said.
