The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has summoned two prison officials to appear before it on June 7 in connection with the purchase of sanitary napkins for women prisoners in Tiruchi prison.

SHRC member D. Jayachandran has summoned former Superintendent of Prisons Nikila and present Superintendent of Prisons Rajalakshmi before the Commission at 10.30 a.m. on June 7 for inquiry, along with details regarding the purchase of sanitary napkins from NGOs.

The SHRC member had initiated suo motu proceedings on his visit to the Tiruchi prison and directed the Additional Director General of Police, Prisons, to submit a report over the steps taken to issue sanitary napkins to women prisoners across the State.

During his visit, many women prisoners alleged that they had not been provided with sanitary napkins for the last two years. The Commission had earlier directed the Deputy Director of Health Services, Tiruchi, and the Director of Public Health, Chennai, to appear on May 15 for an inquiry.
