A six-member gang has been arrested in connection with robbery in the house of Meharunnisa (60). She is a retired woman sub-inspector and was alone in her house in New Bethlehem in Ambur on Thursday.

According to a release from the Superintendent of Police, Vellore district, five persons entered the house of Meharunnisa at 11 a.m. on Thursday. They tied her to a chair, closed her mouth with plaster and walked away with six sovereigns kept in the bureau.

On a complaint from Meharunnisa at the Ambur Town Police Station, a party led by Saravanan, Ambur Town Police Inspector, conducted the investigation and arrested S. Shiraj Ahmed (35) of Saidapet, Vellore, who is a relative of the complainant and who had visited her house half-an-hour before the incident. On interrogation, Shiraj Ahmed confessed to have plotted the crime along with his friend B. Ejaz (35) of Virudhambut, Vellore. After Shiraj informed Ejaz on Thursday morning that the retired sub-inspector was alone, the latter along with four friends from Bangalore, Irfan (25), Naveeth (22), Yunosh (20) and Dhada Beer (26) entered her house. The gang handed over the stolen jewels to Ejaz and left for Bangalore. They decided that they would share the proceeds of the sale of the stolen property later.

Shiraj Ahmed was earlier arrested, in 2012, in connection with the theft of Rs.80,000 from the headmaster’s room in the Government High School, Oomerabad.

On information provided by Shiraj Ahmed, the police arrested the other five on Friday morning.
