Irked with the poor condition of roads under Thoothukudi Corporation limits, traders and the public blocked Victoria Extension Road here on Friday evening.
K. Muthuselvan, one of the protestors, said that people, who used the city roads, especially Victoria Extension Road, had been experiencing hardship every day since the road laying work was left incomplete.
With gravel left uncovered on Victoria Extension Road for over 20 days, it was difficult for vehicle users to move on the road.
On many occasions, two-wheeler riders lost balance on the road. Pedestrians were exposed to dust that was unsettled by every moving vehicle, G. Ramamurthi, a trader, said.
Corporation Executive Engineer A. Lakshmanan, who arrived at the scene, said that tenders would be floated on February 5 to lay Victoria Extension Road and 40 other roads under the corporation limits at an estimated cost of Rs. 8.3 crore.
By February end
All these road works would be completed by February end, he added.
