A magistrate’s court in Kayts, off the Jaffna peninsula in northern Sri Lanka, on Thursday extended the remand of 38 Indian fishermen until December 31.

They were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on September 28 on charges of violating the International Maritime Boundary and poaching in the Sri Lankan waters.

Earlier this week, Sri Lanka welcomed media reports that the Tamil Nadu government has decided to release Sri Lankan fishermen in its custody later this month.

Currently, there are 81 Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody.
