Reformer Jeevanandam remembered on his 109th birth anniversary

Freedom fighter and social reformer P. Jeevanandam was remembered on his 109th birth anniversary here on Friday.

Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan garlanded the statue at his Manimandapam in Veppamudu junction in the presence of former minister N. Thalavai Sundaram, MLA K.T. Pachaimal (Kanyakumari), Tamil Nadu Wakf Board Chairman A. Tamilmagan Hussein, Former MLA A. Rajan and local body leaders.

Jeevanandam had participated in the anti-colonial nationalist movement under the leadership of Gandhi and self-respect movement with Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and a communist. He was the founder of the Tamil Nadu Art and Literary Federation (Tamil Nadu Kalai Ilakkiya Perumandram) in 1961.

He was born on August 21, 1907, at Boothapandi to Pattan Pillai and Umayammai. He was elected as the general secretary of Tamil Nadu Congress Socialist party in 1936 at Salem and started a weekly ‘Jana Sakthi’ in 1937. He was elected as the vice-president of Vickramasingapuram spinning mill in 1946 and passed away on January 18, 1963. Every year the Government observes his birth anniversary to remember his work.
