Parking fee

I was charged Rs. 40 as fee for parking my vehicle on April 13 at the eastern entry of the railway junction. I was told that it was premium parking fee. On April 15, when I parked my car at around 5 a.m., I was charged Rs. 30. Once again, on June 1, I was charged Rs. 40. There is no board mentioning the stipulated parking fee at the junction. .

Suvidha specials

The reader has aptly taken cudgels against the Southern Railway for its dubious means of earning revenue ( ‘Unfair fare system,’ May 24, 2016) through Suvidha specials and hit the nail on the head echoing the strong sentiments of aggrieved rail passengers. In the past, the Southern Railway has operated summer specials every year with normal fares. Indian Railways was nationalised only to confer benefits to passengers. The railway administration should switch over to the earlier schedule of summer specials, shedding its commercial outlook. Railways cannot conduct itself as an omni bus operators to fleece the people and should put a stop to Suvidha specials run only to fetch money to its coffers in the name of dynamic fare, exorbitant tatkal charges etc.

Flyovers needed

Vehicle population is growing but all the roads are the same in Madurai. Traffic congestion cannot be solved unless flyover bridges, as planned, are constructed at once. People expect the new government to fulfil all its promises made to the people of Madurai, including construction of flyovers at important junctions.

Use platform

Platforms in the city are not used by pedestrians effectively. Small business is run on platforms, preventing people from using them. People should be encouraged to use platforms.

Road median

Lengthy pits are dug up to construct a concrete road divider in front of the Iyer Bungalow bus stop. Since it is a narrow road, if a bus stops here all other vehicles queue up behind it. As a traffic signal is located a few metres away from the bus stop, vehicle pile up happens again. The avoidable traffic congestion creates unnecessary delay. So, I request the authorities to move the divider beyond the bus stop so that vehicles could overtake stationary buses.

V.S. Madhavan,

Iyer Bungalow
