Even as the Crime Branch CID police formally commenced their investigation into the Rs. 5.75 crore heist on board the Salem-Chennai Express, K.P. Raghuvanshi, the security advisor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Mumbai, held discussions with senior police officers here on Friday on steps to be taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
Mr. Raghuvanshi met the Salem Commissioner of Police Sanjay Kumar and a few other senior officers and discussed the security protocol to be followed when huge amounts of money is transported by banks.
Mr. Raghuvanshi, who was earlier the Director General of Police, Maharashtra, also discussed ways to step up security in case of an emergency.
Separately, CB-CID Superintendent of Police G. Nagajothi met senior officials of her department who are serving in the western districts. She also held discussions with Mr. Sanjay Kumar and Mr. P. Rajmohan, Divisional Security Commissioner, Railway Protection Force, Salem Railway Division on the sequence of events leading to the heist.
Later, Ms. Nagajothi visited the Salem Railway Junction and the goods yard where the wooden boxes containing the currency addressed to the Reserve Bank of India, Chennai, were loaded on Monday. She made inquiries with bank and railway officials, parcel office staff and railway police personnel on the security arrangements followed during the loading of currency boxes.
