Raw materials and machinery worth several lakhs were destroyed in a fire that broke out in a coir fibre making unit at Kullanampatti near here on Wednesday.

Thick smoke emanating from the unit polluted the atmosphere and caused much inconvenience to the people in nearby areas.

Alerted by unit owner Ayisha of Burma Colony at Kullanampatti village, Fire and Rescue Services personnel struggled for three hours to extinguish the fire. They suspected that an electric leak could have caused the fire accident.

Huge stocks of coconut fibre, coir pith and other raw materials worth Rs. 5 lakh were destroyed in the fire. The fire also damaged machinery.

A case has been registered in this connection.
