‘Ramajeyam case being probed from 300 angles’

CBI says it does not have enough manpower to probe case

The Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) on Thursday told the Madras High Court Bench here that it was investigating the 2012 murder of K.N. Ramajeyam, brother of former Transport Minister and DMK Tiruchi district secretary K.N. Nehru, from 300 angles and was confident of nabbing the accused at the earliest.

A government counsel made the submission before Justice A.M. Basheer Ahamed, who was seized of a petition filed by R. Latha Ramajeyam, wife of the deceased, in 2014 with a plea to transfer the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) since the CB-CID personnel were unable to achieve a breakthrough despite investigating the case for long.

CBI’s reservations

The CBI, however, expressed its reservations on taking over the investigation on the ground that it was already handling too many cases and was not equipped with adequate manpower to accept more number of cases.

It also pointed out that it would be better to allow the CB-CID to continue the probe since the latter had been on the job for the last five years.

After hearing the counsel, the judge adjourned for further hearing the transfer application to April 27 since he had to peruse a number of status reports filed so far.
