One of the railway level crossing gates across Chennai-Dindigul track at Balakrishnapuram was damaged as an unidentified vehicle hit it on Tuesday night.

Acting on information given by the gate keeper, officials at Dindigul railway station deputed one more gate keeper to close both sides of the road simultaneously to enable free movement of trains.

The gate keepers blocked the road with chains, and erected a signboard in the middle of the road to alert vehicles.

Loco pilots of all passenger, express and goods trains were alerted about the damage caused to the level crossing gate and cautioned to cross the spot very slowly.

The gate keepers stood on both sides of the road with red flags till Wednesday noon to stop vehicles.

More than 30 trains running between Chennai and various destinations in the southern districts and going to northern States crossed the spot after the gate was closed manually. The technical team installed a new gate and restored mechanical operation around 12 p.m. Dindigul-Siluvathur Road was closed for some time in the forenoon to for repair work.
