Ragging drives student to suicide

November 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Ragging claimed one more young life. This time, the victim was a second-year B.Tech student of Sathyabama University in Chennai. Nineteen-year-old Venkata Krishna Chaitanya hanged himself in his house at Nizampet here on Thursday night.

Nearly eight pages in a diary, purportedly written by Chaitanya, suggested that ragging and harassment by Shekhar, a third-year student of the same college, drove him to take the extreme step, KPHB Colony Inspector V. Sreekanth Goud said on Friday.

The youngest son of businessman Lal Babu, the victim was staying in the university’s hostel in his first year. In the second year, he moved to a rented room outside the university along with three other students, including Shekhar. Chaitanya had come home for Deepavali.

“Now we realise he had come to Hyderabad having decided to end his life and never wanted to return to college,” Mr Babu said over the phone.

A senior official of Chennai City Police said they were yet to receive any word from their Hyderabad counterparts about the death of the student. “If at all any case is filed and the Hyderabad Police wants to investigate it, we will provide all help,” he said.

A senior administrative staff at the college pointed out they had not received any information about the student’s suicide, as the college had been closed for Deepavali holidays from November 7 to 29.

Nineteen-year-old Chaitanya, who was pursuing B.Tech at Sathyabhama University in Chennai, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his house in Hyderabad .
