‘Provide extra care for children during summer’

Hot days are here to stay in the Fort city. As the temperature crossed the 40 degree Celsius mark earlier this month, it is time to stay protected from the sweltering heat.

The temperature has been staying above the 39 degree Celsius mark since April beginning. It went up by a few notches, and recorded 41.1 degree Celsius on April 7. In the last two days, city recorded a temperature of 40.8 degree Celsius (April 10) and 40.1 degree Celsius (April 11).

It is important to protect children from summer-related health problems, according to E. Theranirajan, head, Department of Paediatrics, Government Vellore Medical College Hospital.

“Children should be given hygienic water. Drinking contaminated water can cause illnesses Water-borne diseases such as typhoid and hepatitis A, and Chicken pox are common in this season,” he said.

But all these could be prevented through age appropriate timely vaccination, Mr. E. Theranirajan said adding thatsaid cases of acute diarrhea in children were reported as a result of drinking unhygienic water.

Another cause for concern during summer was was dehydration. “It can cause head ache, muscle cramp and fatigue in children. Replacing fluids is important. Parents should avoid taking their children outside from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” he said.

He advised that children should drink plenty of fluids and eat fruits. Tender coconut and, buttermilk could be given to them.
