Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president E.V.K.S. Elangovan on Monday slammed BJP national president Amit Shah for the criticism he made of the UPA rule at a public meeting here on Saturday.
Referring to Mr. Shah’s accusation that the UPA government was a corrupt one, Mr. Elangovan challenged the BJP to point to a single case of corruption against any of the senior leaders of the Congress.
Even six months after taking charge, the BJP-led Centre has not been able to find any credible case of corruption against any of the Congress leaders, he said.
On Mr. Shah's allegation that fuel prices had hit a record high during the Congress rule, he said international price of oil touched $117 a barrel during the UPA regime and now it was $60. Despite the 50 per cent reduction, the price of petrol has decreased only 13 per cent.
“Instead of passing on the entire benefit to the consumer, the government has imposed more taxes to augment revenue,” he added.
Condemning Mr. Shah's remarks over Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Mr. Elangovan said that a party (the BJP), which had no role in the Independence movement, had no right to criticise a member of the Nehru family on the contribution to the development of the country.
