The DMDK staged a road roko agitation in Elampillai village near here on Friday evening to mourn the sudden demise of Gandhian Sasi Perumal earlier in the day and demanding the State government to implement total prohibition.

The cadre sat on the Pappapatti road in the village for some time and later dispersed peacefully. Magilam, wife of Sasi Perumal and their school-going daughter also took part in the agitation. The Gandhian fought for total prohibition throughout his life and the government should fulfil his wish, the protesters demanded.

Two social activists – Piyush Manush of Salem Citizens’ Forum and Poomozhi of Tamil Nadu People’s Rights Movement – staged sit-in agitation in front of a TASMAC shop near the old bus stand. They demanded the government to implement total prohibition policy in the State as per the wish of Sasi Perumal. As the supporters of both the organisations started gathering in full strength, the police removed Piyush and Poomozhi to the police station. In Coimbatore, members of Indu Makkal Katchi (Tamilagam) staged a protest near two TASMAC outlets close to the Singanallur bus stand on Friday evening. They sought implementation of total prohibition across the State.
