Students of the Government Nursing School at Mahatma Gandhi Government Memorial Hospital were locked up inside their hostel by the management on Thursday morning, to prevent them from continuing their protests.
The students had begun protests on the hospital premises on Wednesday against the recent High Court verdict which stipulated that future appointments for nursing jobs in government institutions be based on a common entrance examination in which both students of government nursing colleges and private institutions can compete. Till now, students of government colleges were given preference for government appointments.
On Thursday morning, the management of the hostel bolted the door at the only entrance and exit from the hostel, locking the students inside.
P.Karkuzhali, the dean of Mahatma Gandhi Government Memorial Hospital, had instructed the hostel authorities to let the students out only after 10 a.m., according to a student.
Angered and upset, the students banged on the doors attracting a lot of public attention. After several tense minutes, the hostel management finally opened the door and let the students out.
The excited students brushed past each other in a hurry to get out and resumed their protests near the gates of the hospital.
“I have conveyed a message about the protests to the higher authorities and I am awaiting a reply. Till then I will not take any action,” Ms. Karkhuzhali said.
