March 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

Condemning the permission granted for establishing a multinational beverage giant’s manufacturing unit at Gangaikondan SIPCOT Industrial Estate near here and capacity addition of another beverage manufacturing company, members of the youth wing of Tirunelveli district Tamil Maanila Congress submitted a petition to the Collector during the weekly grievance day meet held on Monday.

They said the soft drink manufacturer was drawing nine lakh litres of water a day from the Tamirabharani. Now, the franchisee had planned to go in for expansion and it would require the company to draw more water from the perennial river.

Another transnational beverage giant had also planned to establish its manufacturing unit in the SIPCOT Industrial Estate after getting formal permission from the State government to add more miseries to the farming community and the public. “Considering the demand for water for irrigation and drinking purposes in this region, the State government should cancel the permission granted for establishing a new unit and expansion of another soft drink producer,” they said.

Demand for road

Another group of people from Arunaaperi near Alangulam submitted a petition seeking approach road for the cremation ground. The petitioners said the access road leading to the cremation ground had been blocked following the construction of a compound wall around Naagalkulam Primary Agriculture Cooperative Bank.

Hence, the Collector should instruct the officials to ensure access to the cremation ground by leaving adequate path near the cooperative bank, they demanded.
