Anti-sea Erosion Wing of Public Works Department has prepared an estimate for construction of an anti-sea erosion wall to a length of about 500 metres at Eraviputhenthurai coastal village in Thoothur panchayat in Kanniyakumari district, A. Christhu Nesa Kumar, Executive Engineer, Anti-Sea Erosion Wing, said.

Mr. Christhu Nesa Kumar told The Hindu that as per directions from Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan, the PWD had prepared the urgent estimate to the tune of Rs. 2 crore for submission to the government through the district administration.

Over 150

Over 150 houses in Eraviputhenthurai were damaged by sea erosion following high tides accompanied by strong winds on the night of May 14.

The Collector inspected the village on May 17 and issued directions to prepare the estimate for construction of the anti-sea erosion wall, Mr. Christhu Nesa Kumar said.

Rough sea

The sea in the area was usually rough from May to September, with waves rising to a height of 10 to 15 feet.

In the absence of an anti-sea erosion wall in the village seawater entered more than 150 houses of fishermen on May 14, the villagers said.

K. Julius, a social worker and former president of the Boat Union, had already urged the district administration to take immediate action to construct a wall or groyne, they added.
