Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation (TNSC) has produced 2,18,450 tonnes of industrial salt during 2016-17, an all-time high since its inception in 1978, Managing Director Har Sahay Meena said.

Addressing the function held here on Thursday to inaugurate a salt refinery, he said the corporation’s previous record production of 1.78 lakh tonnes was achieved during 2012-13.

He said the TNSC had provided direct employment to 1,350 people from 15 villages in the region and indirect employment to 300 people, he said.

TNSC General Manager P.K. Dillikumar said the corporation started producing 700 tonnes of salt in 1978 to make the meteoric rise at present.

After using about 30,000 tonnes of its production for making crystal iodised salt, the corporation supplied the remaining quantity for industrial purposes. It had also achieved the highest turnover of ₹39 crore during 2016-17, surpassing the achievement of ₹32 crore turnover recorded during 2012-13, he said.

The corporation was making loss till 1991, when it started supplying value-added iodised and double-fortified salt through outsourcing. Since then, it had been making profit and paying dividends to the government, he said.
