Officials cite ‘security reasons’

The Prisons Department has shifted P. Sahadevan, 42, who escaped from the Vellore Central Prison for Men on Thursday and was later caught, to the Central Prison in Salem.

According to the prison officials, Sahadevan was shifted to the Central prison in Salem on Saturday for “security reasons.”

Sahadevan, who was arrested in connection with a murder case and lodged in the Vellore prison, scaled the prison wall and climbed down by tying a “dhoti” to an iron rod on the compound wall on Thursday morning. Though the prison wall has electric fencing, there was no electricity supply for these iron rods.

A police team from Vellore nabbed him from the bus stand at Bargur at 4.30 p.m. on the same day.
