Preliminary examination for civil services held

Hundreds of candidates appeared for the civil services preliminary examination in 98 centres across the city on Sunday.

This year, most of the centres were located along public transit corridors.

Information was disseminated by a few persons on social media claiming that the instructions were printed prominently in Hindi in some of the centres.

Even as the information triggered a debate, some of those who tweeted also pointed to instructions printed in English.

One of the tweets in the morning read: “Guidelines for the candidates who are appearing for #UPSC exams r printed only in Hindi at an Examination centre at Chennai.”

Later the person tweeted, claiming that they found the guidelines printed in English language, “inside the exam centre.”

Many of the candidates from Tamil Nadu have been requesting the Union Public Service Commission to frame question papers in regional languages also.

Currently, the questions are framed only in English and Hindi.

An advantage

Even as candidates are permitted to answer the Civil Services (main) Examination in languages such as Tamil, data compiled for the past few years point to an advantage for candidates from Hindi-speaking States.
