“Poll results not a foregone conclusion”

September 28, 2011 01:08 am | Updated August 02, 2016 03:51 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayakant on Tuesday sought to dispel the impression that representatives of local bodies belonging to the ruling party alone could ensure development, arguing that local bodies on their own could implement development projects through funds allocated to them.

Addressing a public meeting here to introduce his party's Mayoral candidate Velmurugan and candidates for the Chennai corporation wards, Mr Vijayakant asked voters not to get carried away by the campaign.

The actor, who faced the 2011 Assembly elections as part of the AIADMK alliance, said there was no truth in the argument that the ruling party alone would win the local body polls.

“If people decide they can change their fate,” he added.

Mr. Vijayakant said the present local body poll was witnessing the phenomenon of many political parties entering the fray independently in tune with his line of thinking that all parties should prove their strength by going it alone.

“But today many parties are not able to find candidates,” he said.

Responding to the criticism that he had not expressed his views on the performance of the government, he recalled the words of former Chief Minister Kamaraj that a government should be given six months time before being subjected to criticism.

“My silence is like that of the sea. Beneath the silence lies a tumultuous situation,” he said.

Mr. Vijayakant said he was facing a crisis since the CPI had decided to join hands with his party after many of his partymen had filed nominations.

“The CPI has reposed faith in us. Those who have faith will not be let down. But I will also ensure that the money spent by my party men will not go waste,” he said.

His wife Premalatha said the only area Tamil Nadu had witnessed in terms of growth was retail liquor shops run by the TASMAC.

“These shops are destroying innumerable families,” she alleged.
