Erwadi police have taken custody of Mohamed Yunus (67), the Pakistani national who was arrested on July 23, for further questioning.

After the local Judicial Magistrate Court granted two-day police custody of Yunus, Erwadi police on Friday brought him from Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai, where he had been lodged in judicial remand.

Yunus, who clandestinely arrived at Ammapettai in Thanjavur district in a ferry from Sri Lanka on May 2, had visited Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and a few places in Bihar and Rajasthan before reaching Erwadi, where the police detained him on the night of July 21.

During interrogation, he had reportedly told the police that he was deputed by one Kamal in Colombo for trafficking a narcotic drug after procuring it from a contact in Ahmedabad. As he had made contradictory statements during interrogation and his claims had loose ends, the police took him in their custody for further questioning, the police said.

He would be produced before the court on Monday, they said. Research and Analysis Wing officials were likely to come from Chennai to question Yunus, they added.
