Nearly three years after retiring from service, a 61-year-old man, who is suffering from paralysis, is still waiting for his retirement benefits.
With his pleas going unheard, he and his family members arrived at the Collector’s office on Monday with a can of kerosene to attempt immolation but their bid was foiled by police personnel.
Daily wage worker
N. Subramani, a resident of Sempalli village in Gudiyatham, was a daily wage worker with the Public Works Department for 10 years. Nearly five-and-a-half years ago, his job was regularised, and he retired as an irrigation assistant in 2013, his son Lokesh said. “My father suffered a paralytic attack six months before retirement in 2013. Since then, we have been waiting for his retirement benefits. We have submitted numerous petitions but nothing has fructified ,” he said.
Earlier, officials told them that a government order had to be issued. That too was done early this year. But there is no sign of the money, he added.
Two years ago, Subramani developed difficulty in speech due to the paralytic attack.
Increasing expenses
“My father’s medical expenses are increasing by the day, and we need to spend at least Rs. 9,000 on his medicines every month. If the government releases his retirement benefits for the 5.5 years of permanent service, it will be helpful. There are many people like my father, who are waiting for the benefits for a long time,” Mr. Lokesh added.
Subramani along with his wife and son arrived at the Collector’s office hours before the public grievance redressal meeting commenced.
However, timely alert helped police personnel to thwart their immolation bid.
