Playing the role of Good Samaritan, the police took an initiative to admit children who were on the streets to a school to prevent them from taking to crime later in their lives.
During regular patrol, R. Vijayakumar, Inspector of Police, Ambattur Estate, found 15 families of nomads staying under an overbridge near the BSNL Exchange.
On inquiry, he found that three of the children had dropped out of school.
They were either begging on the streets or selling artificial ornaments at public places.
On seeing the plight of the children, the police made an earnest effort to get them back to school. Mr. Vijayakumar told The Hindu: “The parents of children told us that three of them were admitted to schools a couple years ago. But as they had to incur extra expenses on dresses, transport and other incidental charges, they were not able to continue to send the children to school. We immediately contacted the headmaster of a nearest school who readily accepted to admit the children.”
Explaining the importance of education, the police officer convinced the parents to send them again to school.
Six girls and four boys were admitted to the Government High School, Pattravakkam.
Mr. Vijaykumar said, “Our personnel also took them to the schools in our vehicles and two Sub-Inspectors have been assigned to look after them. They were admitted to English medium sections. We hope our effort prevents them from taking up criminal acts in future.”
Police personnel gesture
Police personnel sponsored uniforms, books, bags, toothbrushes, paste and other items to the children.
