After rounding up over 600 persons in storming operations over the past few days, the city police are meeting residential associations to create awareness of crime prevention and safety.
From June 12, the city police started storming operations across the city at night to crack down on anti-social elements, mainly chain-snatchers and robbers.
Over 150 checking points have been set up across the city. Besides, hotels and lodges are being checked on a regular basis.
Till Sunday, 596 persons were rounded up. Of them, 300 were detained. “This has helped us nab many thieves and anti-social elements who were plotting a robbery or an attack on rival gangs,” said a senior police officer.
On Saturday night, the police nabbed five persons with non-bailable warrants against them and 52 persons were detained for questioning. Besides, 39 persons were held under Section 109 and 110 of the CrPC, the police said.
Cooperation sought
“From now on, we will ensure that no shops are open around midnight so that people don’t gather around the shop. We request the public to cooperate as we are doing this for their safety,” said a police officer.
Meanwhile, special teams of the city police have arrested 17 youngsters in Koyambedu and Madhavaram and seized their bikes as they were suspected of being involved in racing on 100 Feet and Ennore highway during Saturday night.
Apart from the crackdown, the police have started holding meetings with residential and commercial associations on safety and installation of CCTV cameras in their buildings.
