The Madras High Court on Wednesday posted for November 8, hearing on a petition by Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy challenging the premature release of nearly 1,400 life convicts in 2008.

On September 2, Dr. Swamy had made a mention before a Bench headed by Chief Justice M.Y .Eqbal seeking early hearing on the petition. He said that he had read a newspaper report about the proposal to prematurely release prisoners this year too, to coincide with the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai on September 15.

The Chief Justice had posted the matter for Wednesday before another Bench.

The matter came up before a Division Bench, comprising Justices F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla and M.M. Sundresh.

Dr. Swamy was present and said the matter was pending for a long time. Later, the Bench fixed the date for hearing of the petition.
