Carrying empty pots, a group of women from Chokaattaanthoppu and Thenpaththu near here came to the Collectorate on Monday and submitted a petition to Collector M. Karunakaran demanding regular supply of drinking water.

The women affiliated to various self-help groups from Chokaattaanthoppu and Thenpaththu said they had submitted a petition demanding regular supply of drinking water on April 6 last and a team of officials from Maanur panchayat union office visited their villages to study the problem prevailing in drinking water distribution. They also met the women to learn the severity of the problem.

However, no action was subsequently taken to mitigate water crisis and hence they had been forced to submit a petition afresh, they said.

A group of villagers from Therkkupatti, led by Nagoor Maideen of Social Democratic Party of India, submitted a petition to the Collector with similar appeal.

The petitioners said the hand-pump installed near the anganwadi could not be used as sewage water was stagnating around it for the past several months. Hence, the hand pump should be installed at some other place with an electric motor, the demanded.

Another group of petitioners from Melapalayam said the primary school at Haamimpuram in their area should be upgraded into middle school as the students, mostly from poor families, could not continue their studies since they had to go to far off places like Palayamkottai or Tirunelveli Junction.

The State coordinator of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam K.S. Rasool Maideen submitted a petition demanding the release of the prisoners who had served 10 years in the jail in view of the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.
