While the Corporation’s decision to give new lease of life to 24 parks across the city with walkers’ path on an outlay of Rs. 29.76 crore has excited the public, its proposal to create windrow composting platforms in 30 residential colonies has triggered panic.

The corporation has a population of 4,73,838 and 252 spots earmarked for parks. Most of these public spaces still remain in a bad shape owing to lack of maintenance though patronage is high. Now, the corporation has planned to make all these spots attractive by creating more facilities, if possible by roping in private sponsors, such as greenery, children’s play equipment and walkers’ path.

“ This project, to be executed with German Bank funding, will provide a decent ambience to the public living nearby and encourage them to go for morning stroll. We’ve planned to renovate 41 parks in the first phase,” said a senior corporation official.

The public spaces at Nalmeippar Nagar South, Selva Vignesh Nagar, India Cements Officers’ Colony, Balaji Avenue, Thalavaipuram, Udaiyarpatti North, Balabhagya Nagar, Selvi Nagar, Vasantham Nagar, Bharani Nagar, C.N. Village, Lakshmipuram (all in Thatchanallur Zone), Darling Nagar, Kamaraj Nagar, Sankar Colony, Arul Nagar, Jaya Nagar, Bombay Theatre West, Saraja Park, Police Colony and Sakthi Nagar (all in Palayamkottai Zone) will be converted into parks.

In Melapalayam Zone, EB Colony, N.H. Colony, Vasantham Nagar, Pothigai Nagar, Thirumal Nagar, Mahizhchi Nagar, Udhaya Nagar, NGO New Colony, KLN Colony, NGO ‘B’ Colony, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Anna Nagar, Thai Nagar, Azhagiripuram and Kattu Puthu Theru spaces for parks will be given facelift.

Vaiyapuri Nagar, Abhirami Nagar, RRJ Nagar, Kodeeswaran Nagar, Veerbhahu Nagar, CSS Nagar, Gandhi Nagar South, Rm.K.V. Nagar and Rail Nagar (Tirunelveli Zone) will get the parks.

However, the proposal to create windrow composting yards in residential areas has triggered a panic among the public though the officials assure that no foul smell would emanate from these spots. Windrow composting is the production of compost by piling organic matter or biodegradable waste in long rows (windrows).

Windrow platforms have been proposed at a cost of Rs. 14.33 crore at Anbu Nagar, Jamal Nagar, Ramalinga Nagar, Valluvar Colony, Anbu Nagar (Police Colony), Ponvizha Nagar, New Nehru Nagar, Thirumal Nagar – 2, Roja Nagar, Venkatathri Nagar, Krishna Nagar, BBC Colony, Hawa Nagar and Medina Nagar (in Melapalayam Zone); Shanthi Nagar, Rahmath Nagar 20th Street, KTC Nagar, TNHB Colony, Pears Avenue, Viswarathna Nagar, Saranya Nagar, Ponmani Nagar, Maharaja Nagar and Anna Nagar (Palayamkottai Zone); SMA Nagar, Adam Nagar, Shastri Nagar and Shaik Madhar Nagar (Tirunelveli Zone) and Nalmeippar Nagar (Thathanallur Zone).

“They can be established at a designated spot on the outskirts like Ramaiyanpatti. The residences will oppose it vehemently,” said a senior police and a revenue official, near whose houses the corporation has planned to establish the compost yard.
