Farmers of M. Kumareddiyapuram in Ettayapuram taluk sought the intervention of administration to permit collection of top soil from water bodies. They staged a demonstration to highlight their demand.

Perumal, who led the agitation at the collectorate here on Monday, said that silt was necessary for cultivable lands to improve productivity. But, only few kanmois were earmarked for collection of silt in the district. All kanmois should be allowed for collecting silt, he said.

Collector M. Ravikumar said 14 kanmois had been identified in the district and needy farmers could collect it from these kanmois. Besides, farmers could seek permission from authorities here to collect silt from other kanmois after getting prior notification, he said.
