Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) chief Ramadoss, on Thursday, urged the State and Central governments to initiate appropriate measures to halt construction of a dam across River Pambaru by Kerala.

Pambaru originates in Kerala and Amaravathi Dam in Tamil Nadu is fed by it and caters to irrigation needs in TN districts including Karur and Tirupur.

“Tamil Nadu farmers should not be affected. The State and Central governments should take appropriate measures to halt the dam’s construction,” Mr. Ramadoss said in a statement here.

“Kerala, which had stopped the construction of a dam across Pambaru due to opposition from Tamil Nadu has now started construction work suddenly,” he said.

Pambaru comes under the purview of Cauvery Tribunal and a nod from it must have been obtained before going ahead with the project, he said.

“It tantamounts to violation of rules by going ahead with the project without clearances,” he added.
