Speaking to reporters, the officials said that over 100 applicants had registered online for the mela.

Applications received for renewal at the mela would be processed in four days and new passports delivered in 15 to 20 days.

Eleven districts are covered by the Regional Passport Office, Madurai.

The Madurai RPO is receiving on an average of 500 applications a day. An average of 800 applications in Madurai RPO and 400 in Tirunelveli RPO are processed every day.

Only two per cent of the applications were pending, the officials said.

During the last financial year, 2.32-lakh passports were issued through the Regional Passport Office, Madurai, and the maximum number of 35,000 was for Kanyakumari.

Such melas would be organised in Ramanathapuram and Villupuram soon, the officials said.
