Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Su. Thirunavukkarasar has called upon party cadre to take part in Gram Sabha meetings on May 1 and pass two major resolutions proposed by the Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangam.

In a statement, Mr. Thirunavukkarasar said cadre had been called upon to pass resolutions on liquor ban and conducting the elections to the local bodies soon.

“We are seeing a number of anti-liquor protests in Tamil Nadu. As per the Supreme Court order more than 3,000 liquor shops have been closed. But the ruling party cadre are taking many measures to ensure this order fails,” he said.

The Congress leader said according to the Supreme Court, if any village panchayat convenes a gram sabha meeting and passes a resolution that liquor shops need to be closed, the government will have to implement it.

He said he will participate in a gram sabha meeting in Perumanadu village in Pudukottai district on May 1 and other leaders of the party will take part in such meetings across the State and called upon cadre to participate and pass the two resolutions.
