Ayakudi Town Panchayat president (AIAMDK) Sundaram (39) and his accomplice Thirukumaran were arrested on charges of illegal sand mining and assaulting a police constable on duty here on Thursday.

Siva Ganesan, a police constable to the Ayakudi police station, was admitted to Palani Government hospital.

The accused were produced before the Palani Judicial Magistrate Court and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Constables Siva Ganesan and Mohana Sundaram intercepted a sand-laden tractor on Mattaparai village road in Ayakudi and asked the tractor driver Thirukumaran to come to the station for interrogation. He immediately alerted the town panchayat president. Sundaram came to the spot and had a quarrel with the policemen.

After heated arguments, he reportedly pushed Siva Ganesan down.

The police said the president had been engaging in lifting sand from forest streams illegally for a long time.

They had warned him several times. With the support of local political leaders, he managed to escape legal action.
