More than 92,000 students will be the first in their family to enter a college. Of them, over 33,000 are girls, according to a data released by the Anna University on Wednesday.
Of the 1,73,687 eligible applicants, 92,731 are first generation graduates, who will be competing with over 80,000 students for the nearly two lakh seats in colleges affiliated to the university. Officials said 546 applications were classified as duplicates.
On Wednesday, Higher Education Minister P. Palaniappan generated the 10-digit random numbers for preparing the merit list to ensure admission when more than one candidate secured the same marks. The ‘inter-se-merit’ will be determined based on (i) the percentage of marks in mathematics; percentage in physics and percentage in the fourth optional subject. When two students continue to be tied after these calculations the older candidate will be placed ahead on the merit list. If two students have the same date of birth, then the higher random number assigned will be given preference, the university officials said. Students may key in their application numbers to find their random numbers. The list will be released on Monday and verification of original certificates of students applying in the sports category will be done from Friday to Sunday. A total of 500 seats are available in the sports category. All games approved by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu would be considered, officials said. Shortlisted candidates would be informed through text messages, said secretary of the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions.
As many as 150 seats are allotted under the ex-servicemen category for which 2,518 candidates have applied. Three per cent of the seats are reserved for persons with disability with one per cent reservation each for the orthopaedically challenged, visually challenged and speech and hearing persons.
