The mass sapling planting campaign was inaugurated at the Ornamental Lake on Saturday.

The ‘Makkal Paadhai’ organisation launched a mass sapling planting campaign and planted over 500 saplings on the banks and in the vicinity of Ornamental Lake (Alankara Yeri) in Yercaud on Saturday.

About 250 volunteers of the Makkal Paadhai and students of Sona College of Technology joined hands with the Yercaud Youth Welfare Association (YYWA) and planted saplings of neem, pungan, poo arasan, royal palm trees.

Seed balls

The volunteers, led by Sateesh Perumal, district coordinator of ‘Makkal Paadhai’ and Arun and Deepak, its project coordinators, planted saplings in the taluk office and also on the government higher secondary school campus in the hill station. Besides, they also spread over 500 seed balls in the barren region of the forest area.

Deva Prakash, president of YYWA, handed over the saplings. P. Munusamy, forest ranger, inaugurated the project. The project was a part of ‘save Ornamental Lake project’ implemented by the YYWA to restore and save the lake.

The YYWA volunteers recently desilted the lake by raising public donations and also undertook various lake beautification projects.

They have been conducting programmes to create awareness on protecting the lake and the environment among the local people and also the tourists.
