Over 2,000 women benefit from scheme

A total of 2,023 women who have girl children have benefitted from the Chief Minister’s Girl Child Protection Scheme in the district. They have received funds to the tune of Rs 6.95 crore, according to Collector N. Venkatachalam.

Disbursing the deposit certificate to the beneficiaries here on Thursday, he said the government had provided a fixed deposit of Rs 50,000 for families with a girl child and Rs 25,000 for each girl child for families with two girl children. The period of maturity has been fixed at 18 years.

In 2011-2012, 761 beneficiaries were covered.

A total of 715 beneficiaries were covered in 2012-2013, and 547 beneficiaries in 2013-2014 in the district, the Collector added.

The main objective of the scheme was to extend financial assistance to girl children in poor families and help in their education.

Families with a low annual income were eligible for the scheme.
