With the financial year coming to a close, the Vellore and Tirupattur postal divisions have opened more than 18,000 accounts under the newly introduced “Sukanya Samriddhi Account” for girl children.
The Central government had introduced the small savings scheme for welfare of girls. Special camps were held at a number of post offices including on two Sundays to promote the account.
Up to March 31, the Vellore division has opened 8,207 accounts against its target of 8,200 accounts. The total deposit received under the account is around Rs. 1.13 crore, officials said.
Officials said opening of accounts under this scheme commenced during the last week of February in Vellore division.
The Tirupattur division has so far opened a total of 10,750 accounts under the scheme with a total deposit of more than Rs. 1.3 crore till March 31, according to a press release.
The division had conducted special campaign to promote the scheme at key post offices such as Tirupattur head office, Gudiyatham head office, sub post offices at Ambur, Vaniyambadi, Pernambut and Kandhili.

Considering the good response from the public, instructions have been issued to all post offices in the division to render better service to the public for opening more number of accounts in this financial year 2015-2016.
