Organ donor and recipient become family

Third anniversary of ‘Gift An Organ’ organised to honour donors and families of deceased organ donors

As personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi and K. Kamaraj gave their fullest to the nation through committed service, one can turn his or her life as a gift to society by donating all possible organs, actor and orator R. Sivakumar said here on Sunday. He was addressing a gathering, including registered organ donors and families of deceased organ donors, at the third anniversary of ‘Gift An Organ’, an initiative to promote organ donation by Coimbatore chapters of Confederation of Indian Industries and Young Indians.

Mr. Sivakumar and Commissioner of Coimbatore Corporation K. Vijayakarthikeyan honoured the organ donors and families of deceased organ donors at the event which coincided with World Organ Donation Day.

Mr. Vijayakarthikeyan said the Corporation is developing a smartphone-based application to aid blood donation, imbibing the spirit and need of organ donation. He said that cities such as Hyderabad has followed ‘Gift An Organ’ as a model initiative.

R.V. Ramani, project chairman of ‘Gift An Organ’ and founder of Sankara Eye Care Institutions India, said that Tamil Nadu is the leading State in the country in terms organ donation. While 5,550 people have so far benefited from donor organs, five lakh people are waiting for donors.

As many as 13 hospitals in Coimbatore have joined hands to promote the initiative ‘Gift An Organ’.
