OPS cautions Karunanidhi on river water disputes

‘We are taking steps to counter Karnataka’s plan to build a dam across the Cauvery’

November 19, 2014 08:11 am | Updated May 23, 2016 07:00 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Tuesday urged DMK president M. Karunanidhi not to issue statements blaming the State government on inter-State river water issues as these would be used by the Kerala and Karnataka government against Tamils.

Explaining the steps the government had taken to protect the interests of the State, Mr Panneerselvam said in a statement that the Mullaperiyar dam level now stood at 141.35 feet. In the present circumstances, there was no need for adopting any resolution in the Assembly. The government was also taking steps to counter Karnataka’s plan to build a dam across the Cauvery at Mekedatu, he said.

Special Correspondent reports from Cuddalore:

Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi founder T. Velmurugan has condemned the assault on the Tamil Nadu PWD (Periyar Division) Executive Engineer, A. Madhavan, by certain persons, who accompanied Peermedu MLA Biju Mol, on the Mullaperiyar dam site on Monday.
