Opposition stages walkout

March 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - SALEM:

Stating that even 20 per cent of the works undertaken in the last three years were not completed, Opposition DMK Councillors staged a walkout wearing black dress, even before the budget was presented here on Monday.

Led by Opposition leader M. Bhuvaneswari, all the eight Councillors, raised slogans against carrying the former Chief Minister Jayalalitha’s picture on the budget book.

Addressing the media, Ms. Bhuvaneswari said that there was no progress in work being implemented by the civic body in the last three years, and schemes announced in previous budgets were repeated in the present budget too.

She said that even basic facilities were not improved and poor sanitation lead to outbreak of diseases in the city.

Salaries to corporation are delayed and no payments have been made to persons who have taken tender for various works, she added.

She demanded that the Mayor should resign taking moral responsibility for failing to concentrate on people’s welfare. Later they tore up a copy of the budget books and raised slogans.
