Only two units of Tuticorin Thermal Power Station (TTPS) are functional, and power generation from the other three units has been suspended. Each of the units has a generation capacity of 210 MW.
Currently, the third and the fourth units had been generating power, sources told The Hindu here on Wednesday.
While the first unit had been kept in standby mode for the last five days, the second unit, which suffered a breakdown on Tuesday, would resume power generation soon, the sources said.
The 10-day annual overhauling was nearing completion in the fifth unit. If Load Despatch Centre authorities directed resumption of power generation from the fifth unit, it would be made operational on Thursday, sources said.
With the increased wind power generation, the centre had slowed down conventional thermal power generation.
Around 2,100 MW of electricity was derived from wind energy sources established in Tirunelveli Circle of Non-Conventional Energy Source, TANGEDCO, till 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday.
There was a downfall in wind energy production over the last three days in the wake of rains in the southern region, mostly in Madurai to Kovilpatti. Electricity generation from wind turbines suffered a drastic fall on August 14 when only 800 MW was achieved. The previous day, wind energy realisation was 1000 MW.
The generation went up to 1,785 MW on Tuesday (August 15), the sources added.
