SATTUR

A worker was killed and another critically injured in a fire accident at a cracker unit near Sattur in Virudhunagar district on Tuesday.

The deceased was M. Ramachandran (36) of Elumichaipatti. The injured, M. Balamurugan (35) of the same village, is undergoing treatment at Sivakasi Government Hospital.

Police said the duo suffered over 90% burns. Friction caused while mixing chemicals for making crackers led to the accident at Pandiselvi Fireworks unit.

A ball of fire engulfed the duo who had arrived earlier for mixing work around 7.15 a.m. The fire did not destroy any of the buildings, the police said.

Fireworks unit foreman Mahendra Kumar had been arrested. No one else was injured in the accident, Sattur Deputy Superintendent of Police S. Narayanan, who inspected the scene of accident, said.
