Social organizations and a few political parties jointly conducted a demonstration here on Wednesday against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project on the occasion of ‘World Fishermen Day’.
The protestors said the KKNPP, which was threatening the livelihood of the fishermen living close to the villages around the project site, should be scrapped immediately.
The State Government, which had registered “fake cases against the anti-KKNPP protestors under draconian sections”, should withdraw such cases, they said.
When the protestors came to the Collectorate to submit a petition in this connection to Collector R. Selvaraj, he was not present at his chamber as he was out of station for the past few days on an official visit. Agitated over the Collector’s absence at the Collectorate, a section of the protestors shouted that they would submit the petition either to a donkey or to a stray cattle.
When a few of them were against this idea, they finally decided to put it in the Tamirbharani, flowing in front of the Collectorate.
In the ‘World Fishermen Day’ observed at Idinthakarai, the anti-KKNPP agitation hub, the protestors, led by Anti-KKNPP Struggle Committee convener S.P. Udayakumar, took out a procession to neighbouring coastal hamlet, Thomaiyaarpuram, while the fishermen of Kooththenkuzhi also came to spot to offer special prayers and sprinkled flower petals in the sea.
