College signs MoU

with NSE

The American College, Madurai, has signed a memorandum of understanding with National Stock Exchange (NSE) to train students on capital markets under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna (PMKVY). The programme will be implemented through National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). Students will be offered a five-day certification programme by the NSE. After their training, an evaluation will be done by the NSDC. Successful candidates will get certificates under the PMKVY, which will be recognised by all banking, non-banking financial institutions and stock broking companies.

Forum inaugurated

Narayanan Kannan, Professor in Environmental Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia, inaugurated the Botany Association of Thiagarajar College recently. In his address, Prof. Kannan highlighted the need to protect the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling plastic products. He also elaborated on the need for preserving ancient Tamil documents on herbal medicine and traditional medical practices through e-documentation and databases. Further, he emphasised the importance of promoting ecotourism and community participation in maintaining environmental health. He said that a centralised commitment from the people and government would help in leaving an unpolluted environment to the future generation. T. Rajasekar, Principal (in charge), presided over the inauguration. M. Eyini, Head of the Department, welcomed the gathering.

Kamaraj remembered

The Department of Youth Welfare of Saraswathi Narayanan College, Madurai, observed the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Kamaraj as Educational Development Day. S. Gnanasambathan, Programme Executive, All India Radio, the chief guest, spoke about the contributions of Kamaraj to the development of Tamil Nadu. K. Jeyakodi, Coordinator, welcomed the gathering. M. Kannan, Principal, presided over the programme. K. Krishnan, Vice-Principal, and M. Jeyakumar, Coordinator, offered felicitations. M.G. Haribalaji of II B. Com. proposed a vote of thanks.

Maths quiz

The Department of Mathematics of Velammal College of Engineering and Technology, Madurai, organised a State-level mathematics quiz competition on July 17 with B. Vellaikannan, Professor of Thiagarajar College of Engineering as quiz master. Forty one teams from 22 schools in Tamil Nadu participated in the competition. Students of Velammal Vidyashram, Chennai, won the first prize (Rs. 5,000), followed by Alagappa Higher Secondary School, Karaikudi, (second prize Rs. 3,000), Mahatma Montessori Matriculation Higher Secondary School, K.K. Nagar, Madurai (third prize Rs. 2,000), and Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Mogappair (East), Chennai (consolation prize Rs. 1,000). The prizes were given away by Ganesh Natarajan, vice-chairman. S. Velammal, Head, Department of Mathematics, welcomed the gathering. The Principal, N. Suresh Kumar, offered felicitations. S. Karthikeyan proposed a vote of thanks.

Student cabinets inaugurated

Student cabinets of Om Sadhana Central School and Sri Sadhana Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai, were inaugurated at a function recently. The office-bearers were installed by X.P. White, life skills specialist. Infanta Tracy welcomed the gathering. Pooja Shree of ninth standard was inducted as prime minister of Om Sadhana Central School and Shashank Aadarsh of eighth standard for Sri Sadhana Matriculation Higher Secondary School. P. Natanagurunathan spoke on the importance of life skills to be successful in life. P.N. Paramakalyani and M.S. Selvi, Principals, offered felicitations. R.K. Rithani of ninth standard proposed a vote of thanks.
