Two nodal officers of the Central government are in Vellore district to monitor the implementation of seven schemes as part of ‘Gram Swaraj Abhiyan,’ a village self-governance campaign.

On Tuesday, the two officials, along with Collector S. A. Raman, took part in a special awareness camp to enrol people in the Centre’s ‘Pradhan Mantri Jandhan Yojana,’ ‘Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana’ and ‘Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana’ at Kaveripakkam panchayat union and Arcot panchayat union.

Implementation report

One of the officers, Jayaseelan, said they had been appointed for all districts to monitor if the Central government schemes reached people in rural areas and submit a report. During the programme, he explained the features of the insurance schemes brought in by the Central government, according to a press release.

Mr. Raman said ‘Gram Swaraj Abhiyan’ had been launched in 74 village panchayats in Vellore district.

He pointed out that in other States, drip irrigation equipment was provided with 80% subsidy, while agricultural equipment was given in Tamil Nadu with 100% subsidy.

During the programme, the officials handed over ₹80,000 each as loan to five women Self-Help Groups belonging to Kaveripakkam panchayat union to start ‘Velma’ stores, and ₹2 lakh under the Centre’s insurance scheme to the family of a person who died in an accident in Ocheri. Deepak Sethi, another nodal officer, was present on the occasion, the release said.
