Off-campus recruitment drives for students who have not found employment during the course of study are increasing by the day.

Not wanting to be identified, an engineering college dean says that off-campus drives help students from tier- two and tier-three colleges. The number of well-known recruiters coming to such campuses in a year and the number of candidates they recruit is relatively less compared to tier-one colleges.

Off-campus drives help those who have not found campus placement. On the positive side, it helps students, engineers who have just graduated and even those who completed their college studies a year or two ago find a job.

A placement officer of another engineering college says that for the companies, off-campus drives help them find human resource for their immediate recruitment as against on-campus drives where the students takes the job after a good six months to nine months.

But is there a dip in salaries the companies offer students, young engineers in off-campus drives? Partially true, says the head of another institution. The reason has to do with the type of companies that participate in the drives – most of these are small and medium sized service companies as against product development and manufacturing companies that participate in on-campus drives.

M. Sivakumar, Chief Executive Officer, ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu, says that to help those looking for jobs get into well-known companies and the companies get good workforce his organisation facilitates off-campus recruitment drives in various parts of Tamil Nadu. And, to help those seeking jobs the organisation also has various tools to improve employability.
