Not a lure for some

Ex-servicemen seem to show an interest in poll duty, while retired policemen shy away from it.

Nearly 230 ex-servicemen have come forward to be part of the security arrangements in Coimbatore. This is against just two retired policemen who have turned up for the polling duty, sources said.

While ill health and long years of service age of retirement are cited as reasons for the poor turnout, another main reason is poor pay. While retired policemen are paid a mere Rs. 325 a day, ex-servicemen got Rs. 750 a day, the sources added. - M.K. Ananth
