DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday reiterated there was no confusion with regard to his stand on a separate Tamil Eelam and he could not help it if some people had imagined that he had given up the cause of Tamil Eelam.
“There is no confusion at all,” he said recalling his explanation in a media briefing a couple of days that “in a democracy, decisions should be taken after taking into consideration the views of the participants in the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) conference and it is unfair to impose his views.”
He had made these remarks after reporters asked him why the theme paper for the conference was silent on a referendum for a separate Eelam.
Mr. Karunanidhi said while informing the media that the conference would discuss the ways and means to improve the livelihood of the Tamils and mitigate their sufferings and protect them from the excesses of the Sri Lankan Army, he had specifically clarified that one need not be under the impression that the DMK had given up its goal of a separate Eelam.
He regretted that a section of the media, which was in the habit of distorting and ridiculing the DMK’s viewpoint, had run a campaign that the DMK had dropped the idea of Tamil Eelam.
The DMK leader said the objective of the TESO conference slated for August 12 was to prevail upon India and like-minded countries to take steps to put an end to the sufferings of the Sri Lankan Tamils.
