Union Minister of Shipping G.K. Vasan inaugurated the newly constructed house of saint composer Thyagaraja on Thirumanjana Veedhi at Thiruvaiyaru on Friday in the presence of Union Minister of Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh. The new house was constructed by the Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha at a cost of Rs.40 lakh after demolishing the old, dilapidated structure. The Sabha organises the annual Thyagaraja aradhana. An idol of Thyagaraja is placed in a temple-like structure inside the house. An old well used by the saint is still there. With brick works of musical instruments adorning the walls the house resembles a musical hall.

Portraits of M.S. Subbulakshmi, D.K. Pattammal, Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Semmangudi Srinivasa Aiyer, Madurai Mani, Palghat Mani, and G.N. Balasubramanian are on display.

Audio CDs on ‘Gems of Thyagaraja,' concerts of M.S.Subbulakshmi, G.N. Balasubramnian and D.K. Pattammal are available at the house. Rare books on South Indian Music, Complete Kritis of Thyagaraja, Thyagaraja Hirudayam have been displayed.
